Project movie
Every day a Sunday

As a result of the compact city policy (lack of nature, space to play, peace, etc.), the behaviour of city folk tries to compensate by going in search of different forms of recreation in a tranquil, usually green setting: the allotment, the caravan, or the beach hut, for example.

In that connection, an outdoor recreation facility is designed in the Gooi en Vecht region for people from the city with low income. Traditionally, the Vecht region, one of the most beautiful parts of the country and situated close to Amsterdam, is the place outdoors for the people with the highest income. This outdoor recreational facility consists of two climatised dream worlds (woods and water) that can be used all year round (Buckminster Fuller), one in a wooded setting, the other in surroundings with a variety of water. (rain, clouds, waterfalls, etc.)

Each building consists of 120 residential units. That means a village with about 360 residents. The simplicity of the campus was chosen as the starting point to bring the city folks as close as possible to nature and to keep the expenses of staying there down. The transparent skin that spans the indoor world (180 x 200m) to protect it from the vagaries of Dutch weather was chosen for standard elements from the building of production glasshouses, which are typical of the Dutch cultivated landscape and which entail low building costs.

The woodland variant has been elaborated in more detail because of its top position on the list of preferred recreational landscapes. The woodland glasshouse is situated in the middle of the wood, has ragged edge and a variety of patios, each with a different program (tree huts, hammocks, etc.) so that the feeling of being in the wood can be enjoyed to the full. Scattered through the glasshouse are thematic glasshouses of different heights. The different climates are separated from one another by glass partitions. This makes it possible to grow other plants besides the usual Dutch vegetation. You therefore feel that you really have left everyday left behind.

Each of these areas has a different theme, as in the botanical garden in Amsterdam or the Belgium national botanical garden in Meise. For instance, there is a theme spot with unusual butterflies, an aviary with tropical birds (for the sounds they make!), a desert area with cacti the size of trees, a water area where you can bathe amid aquatic plants such as the gigantic water-lily Victoria Amazonica, which flowers at night. The themes are connected with one another by the experience route.

The thematic glasshouses adjoin small buildings with general facilities for about 360 people (toilets, showers, washrooms, etc.). These form the link between the thematic glasshouse and the temperate climate, and are the central meeting places. The residential unit has the smallest dimension (6.4 x 6.4m) amid the general greenery. People can choose from a limited place to stay such as the box or the deck with handy dual functions (tables are converted into beds, storage space is incorporated in the seats, etc.). They can do and plant what they like there. This freedom will cause an enormous increase in the diversity of the exuberant greenery.

This is the land of the Frican marigolds and African violets. Wasps and bees feel at home here. There is always the warm feeling of the sun an the warm Sunday feeling: every day a Sunday.
